Enter the questions or points you got right and what the test was out of to get your percentage and letter grade. The grading chart lists every possible score for a test of that length, one row per question missed.

The maths

How a test score is calculated

score = correct ÷ total × 100

Correct is what you got right, in questions or points, and total is what the test was out of. The score rounds half up to two decimals, the way most gradebooks do.

Questions: 17 right out of 20 → 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85, a B.

Points: 43.5 out of 50 → 43.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 87, a B+.

Mixed points: 23 out of 28 → 82.14, a B−.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my test score percentage?

Divide what you got right by the total and multiply by 100: 17 out of 20 is 17 ÷ 20 × 100 = 85%. Points work the same way, so 43.5 out of 50 points is 87%.

How many questions can I miss and still get an A?

On the common US scale an A− starts at 90%, so you can miss a tenth of the test: 2 of 20, 3 of 30 or 5 of 50. The table above gives the count for other test lengths and grades.

What if the questions are worth different points?

Add up the points you earned and the points possible, then enter those two totals. A test of 18 one-point questions and two 5-point essays is out of 28; earning 23 of those points scores 82.14%.

How do I turn a percentage into a letter grade?

The badge beside your score uses common US bands: 93 and up is an A, 90 an A−, 87 a B+, 83 a B and 80 a B−, and so on down to 60, below which is an F. Schools set their own cutoffs, so check your syllabus.

Does the grading chart work for quizzes and homework?

Yes. Anything scored as right out of a total works the same way. Enter the number of questions as the total and the chart lists every possible score, one row per question missed.

Can a test score be over 100%?

Yes, with extra credit: 22 out of 20 is 110%. The calculator accepts it and shows the score as it is.
